REVIVER Technical Description
The REVIVER® PDP11 Replacement System The Comware REVIVER System replaces DEC PDP11 computer systems with a Pentium PC. The heart of The REVIVER system is a high speed PCI Co-Processor board installed in the PC. The Co-Processor contains a Xilinx FPGA bit-slice processor that executes the PDP11 microcode. The Co-Processor is available in 4 different speed versions: SX, DX, TX, and QX, providing 1X, 2X, 3X, and 4X performance, respectively. Typically the single speed (SX) version is used when ATE system controllers are being replaced, for example. The higher speed versions are typically used for offline programming functions where CPU intensive tasks such as test program translations are required. For applications that still require access to PDP11 devices, a Q-BUS or UNIBUS adapter board connects to the Co-Processor board through a Fibrechannel connection. The adapter board then plugs into the Q-BUS or UNIBUS backplane and the original PDP11 devices function as they normally would. The PC's Pentium processor runs the WINDOWS-XP/Pro Co-Processor emulation software and manages the I/O functions of the PC's peripheral devices. The excellent disk caching capabilities of WINDOWS-XP/Pro provides an incredible performance boost to the PDP11 application, resulting in an overall system performance increase that has never been seen before in the PDP11 environment.
